The floodlights were operational in time for the first official FIFA training sessions for the final World Cup qualifying tournament, which Hamilton hosted in February 2023. The three training fields (Gower, KoriKori & Porritt Parks) were all lit to 300 lux, which was part of a strict criteria from FIFA for lighting standards on official training venues.
Part of the Stage 1 works included future proofing the sports parks with electrical capacity upgrades and installing lighting poles with the capacity to backlight extra fields to assist with the delivery of Stage 2 of the floodlighting project.
Neuflow Projects were engaged by Hamilton City Council to deliver floodlighting upgrades to three sports parks in Hamilton, that were to be used as training venues for the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2023, and beyond that as part of a citywide network of high-quality sporting facilities for the community to utilise.
This was the first lighting project of its kind for Hamilton and was the first stage of lighting 21 fields across 5 different sports parks across the city, to improve field use capacity and address the shortfall of training hours across Hamilton.
Working with Stephenson & Turner Engineering, and Pure LED Lighting, the floodlighting was designed to meet not only the requirements for FIFA, but for future community use as well. Innovative technology was used as part of this project, including installing an “ESwitch” which allows the lighting to be controlled via an app from a desktop or a phone, allowing Hamilton City Council to always have full control over the lighting, even remotely.
Record levels of rainfall over the summer period when the lighting was being installed was a challenge for the entire project team, especially with a hard deadline in February when the fields needed to be ready for use for the first international training sessions. This challenge was able to be overcome and all three fields were delivered to FIFA standards in time for the playoff tournament.
