The Result

Managing asset data efficiently is key to streamlining capitalisation. This project introduced a digital-first approach, reducing delays and ensuring asset data was accurate and accessible. By using a structured system, our client could confirm asset values earlier, begin depreciation sooner, and improve long-term maintenance planning.

The structured, technology-driven approach set a new benchmark for asset capitalisation efficiency, ensuring better long-term asset management.

The Project

As part of the Waiora Capacity Upgrade project (project value $17m) our client aimed to enhance asset data management, ensuring a smooth and timely asset capitalisation process. The project sought to leverage Building Information Modelling (BIM) processes to improve accuracy and efficiency in asset data delivery.

A key challenge was ensuring seamless integration of asset data from multiple sources into a central system.  Client, Beca, and Neuflow collaborated to define asset data requirements and implement a digital platform that would streamline data collection, validation, and transfer.

Challenges

  • Defining clear asset data requirements to ensure consistency and accuracy.
  • Implementing Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC) Build – Asset’s module, a new platform in the ANZ region, with no existing setup guidance.
  • Ensuring seamless integration of 2D and 3D graphical data for improved asset identification.
  • Maintaining transparency and quality control while collecting real-time data from multiple sources during construction
  • Merging new technology with existing systems

Our Approach

To meet project goals, the team developed a structured Asset Data Schema to clearly define data requirements for all asset types. Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC) Build – Asset’s module was selected as the central platform for managing asset information.

Given its newness in the ANZ region, the team customised the system to align with our client's needs, integrating 3D models and 2D sheets for improved asset identification.  This meant that all assets could be easily located on a 3D model and navigated to in real life, making them easier to locate for future maintenance purposes.  Each asset was then linked in navigation between 3D model, drawings, P&ID, and site photos along with capturing attribute features and costs.

Neuflow progressively collected and updated asset data onsite within the platform and with bulk editing, during the construction period. Power BI dashboards provided real-time tracking, ensuring transparency and quality control throughout the process. Automation was used to transfer the finalised dataset from ACC to the Capital Projects Asset Datasheet, enabling early asset capitalisation.

This process has allowed asset data to be handed over during commissioning stages of the project  - a very successful result compared to projects of a similar scale which have taken years to capitalise.   This gives the ability to begin depreciating and maintaining the asset sooner.
